Privacy Policy
MarkdownPad is a local-first application. Your documents live on your disk as plain .md files, and we have no access to them. This policy explains what little data is involved when you use MarkdownPad and this website.
1. Information We Collect
Almost nothing. MarkdownPad does not have user accounts, does not require registration, and does not phone home. Specifically:
- No telemetry or analytics — the desktop app sends no usage data.
- No file access — your Markdown files are read and written locally by the app. We never see, upload, or store your content.
- No cookies on this website — we don't use analytics trackers or advertising cookies.
2. Payment Information
If you choose to pay for MarkdownPad (it's pay-what-you-want, including $0), your payment is processed by Polar.sh. Polar collects your email address and payment details to deliver your license key. We receive your email and the amount paid — we never see your card number or billing address. Polar's privacy policy governs how they handle your payment data.
3. Claude AI Integration
MarkdownPad includes an optional Claude AI panel. When you use it:
- The content you send to Claude (your prompt and any file context you share) is transmitted to Anthropic's API over an encrypted connection.
- Anthropic's privacy policy and usage policies govern how that data is handled.
- We do not store, log, or have access to your Claude conversations.
- If you don't use the Claude feature, no data is sent anywhere.
4. Data Storage
All your files, preferences, and editor state are stored locally on your Mac. MarkdownPad uses standard macOS application directories. We have no server-side storage of user data. Uninstalling the app removes everything.
5. Third-Party Services
The only third-party services involved are:
- Polar.sh — payment processing and license key delivery
- Anthropic (Claude) — AI features, only when you actively use the Claude panel
- Google Fonts — this website loads Inter and JetBrains Mono fonts from Google Fonts
6. Children's Privacy
MarkdownPad is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children.
7. Changes to This Policy
If we update this policy, we'll revise the "last updated" date above. Since we collect almost no data, changes are unlikely to be material.
